The OE system: An integral part of the new 4.0 Twin Turbo engines is not only the performance of the turbochargers, but also the cooling system for the charge air (compressed air). A system for cooling the charge air is required, as the air is heated as it is compressed by the turbochargers and must be cooled again for optimal performance. Colder air entering the engine means a much denser oxygenation and improved knock resistance, two key factors in maintaining or improving performance. This cooling system consists of two water charge air coolers that cool the charge air, a water circuit that flows through a pump into the charge air coolers and into a heat exchanger which then cools the water used by the charge air coolers to cool the intake air. As boost pressure increases, as is common with any ECU software upgrade (stage 1/2/3), more heat is introduced into the charge air cooling system. The original charge air cooling system works very well for original systems, however after increasing the boost pressure it can cause difficulties to keep the charge air temperatures constant. The CSF upgradeThe CSF all-aluminum heat exchanger (water cooler) improves the cooling performance of the original heat exchanger that cools the water that cools the charge air. With a more efficient heat exchanger, it can more effectively extract heat from the hot water to keep charge air temperatures cooler and improve resistance to heat impact. Test:In independent testing at Regal Autosport, we found that the heat exchanger can reduce peak charge air temperatures by up to 20 degrees and improve heat soak resistance by up to four times compared to the original heat exchanger. The chart below shows the data collected by Regal Autosport. It was a W205 C63 AMG with Stage 1 ECU tuning. The left (LHS) and right (RHS) side charge air coolers were logged and the test performed was performed with 5 running routes. The data shows that when the car is fitted with the CSF heat exchanger, the car has lower initial temperatures and takes much longer to reach similar temperatures to the stock radiator. In fact, at run 5 there is a delta of 5 degrees verses between the CSF heat exchanger and the stock heat exchanger.
